Fashion and Home Decor

Inspiration can strike at any time!

Recently, I was invited to a Stella & Dot jewelry show at a friend’s home, and it reminded me of just how closely fashion and home decor are entwined.

Home decor trends often follow the latest looks from the runway. For that reason, clothing patterns and color combinations can be a great – and free – resource when it comes to decorating!

Jewelry is no exception. You may have noticed that pieces are trending bigger and bolder – utilizing fun, bright colors!

Take a look at this eye candy I found at the show:

Bahari Necklace

Eleanor Bangle

Wanderlust Triple Wrap

Bamboleo Necklace

Capri Chandelier Earrings

Any one of these color combinations would be great for paint, throw pillows, layering accessories, or even combining artwork.

(BTW…if you are looking for a way to earn an extra income, Stella & Dot is a growing company worth considering! To find out more information visit www.stelladot.com/stylist.)

Awesome Felting: Artists on OKL

One Kings Lane often features the work of up-and-coming artists, or artists working with unique medium. This week, OKL is featuring the work of one of the most inspiring and awesome felting artists: Maryanne Quinn.

I love the colors that she uses, and the overall simplicity of her designs.

Does this inspire you to try a little felting of your own? Creating original artwork is one of FDG’s favorite ways to be frugal!

It’s Even Monogrammed: School Backpacks and Storage

Pinterest

LOVE this idea for organizing the kids’ crap essential school items.

An added plus, is that right now I am into ANYTHING that is monogrammed! School backpacks are, basically, the bane of my existence. I seem to trip over one at least daily!

This is a total “I think I could make that” kind of project. Cork board may be purchased at your local big-box store, and rummage sales are a great place to pick up in-expensive picture frames. Even if they are not the same size, or shape, you can still make a cohesive display by spraying them a uniform color. Or, you may choose to highlight the differences and spray them each in a different hue.

Seriously…there are no rules. EXCEPT that if I am going to go through all the trouble of painting frames, adding cork, and making them monogrammed…school backpacks MUST be hung up!!

Do you have a clever – and frugal – idea for storing kids’ backpacks? If so, FDG would love to hear about it!

Decorating a Bedroom: Off-Center Window Placement Dilemma

There are many obstacles one might encounter when decorating a bedroom: Off-center window placement is one of them. Yet, you would be surprised at just how often this dilemma is encountered!

Anne, from jill of all trades, offers the perfect solution! Take a look at her before and after transformation:

Houston…we have a problem! Anne’s not the only one whose OCD alarm was beeping loudly. But, that clever girl didn’t let it ruin her dreams of slumbering bliss! Instead, she covered her ears and tackled the problem head-on

What to know how? Lucky you…she offers detailed instructions in her blog.

Thank you for sharing, Anne!

Coastal Classics at One Kings Lane

Look at these giant crabs from the Coastal Classics sale starting today at One Kings Lane! I love them…but at close to $100 each, they could definitely be included in the “I Think I could Make That” category.

Stop over at OKL and check them out, though – they are cool! There is also a giant lobster, sand dollar and whale.

Stencil Dresser

We all know that the design world is a fickle one. Trends come, and trends go. Yet, one that seems to be sticking around awhile is the use of modern stencils. Proof? This fabulous stencil dresser I stumbled across at World Market a little while back.

I love this piece! I can’t seem to get enough of that dark gray color…especially when it is paired with a dark wood.

But, what I love the most is the use of that big, bold stencil! Dresser (or buffet) pieces are a prime piece of real-estate to consider when you are looking to add an unexpected twist to your room.

Even better is that they are often a frugal find from tag sales or even your own basement storage.

Here are a few show-stoppers to illustrate my point:

Didn’t Connie over at Salvage Savvy do a fantastic job on this one? She created the piece as part of a review of stencil products from Royal Design Studio. I really like the pairing of stencil on the wall and on the dresser! (Visit her blog to find out more about her experience!)

The Winsome Saddle Seat: An Opportunity for Design

With yard sale season soon to be in full-swing, all of you frugal DIYers will be on the lookout for furniture finds that are ripe for re-purposing. One item not to be overlooked? The Winsome saddle seat stool!

I love these little beauties! Silently, they lie in wait under the counter – ready to answer your beck and call.

Surprisingly, some do not appreciate the Winsome saddle seat quite as much as I do. Perhaps that is why they appear so often as rummage – cast aside by those who can not see their full potential.

Well, you know what they say about trash being another man’s treasure….

Here are a few makeover ideas to get you started.

Look at how that tiny spray-painted POP just MAKES the ENTIRE kitchen a statement. Even better, is the contrast between the sleek cabinet design, and the weathered edges of the seating.

At Home in Arkansas

Rustic is not the style that looks good on theses stools. Here, the monochromatic scheme and nailhead trim give the stools a glamorous, modern look.

DIY Plant Markers – Repurposing Old Bricks

DIY Plant Markers

Let’s face it; the only thing better than a FRUGAL find, is a FREE find…and you can often find people who would be more than happy to have you cart away some of their old, used bricks.

With that in mind, Pam Zundel offers a great tutorial for DIY plant markers using old bricks over at her blog, Simple Details.

I love the charming look she created with just a black Sharpie in hand.

If you are having trouble finding someone willing to part with their bricks, this same technique for DIY plant markers could also be used on a large rock, or even some larger shells – for those of you lucky enough to reside in a costal region.

Great work, Pam…and thank you for sharing!

I encourage you to spend some time exploring Pam’s blog. Like FDG, Simple Details offers inexpensive ideas for creating a stylish home.
