I recently did an article about using chalkboard paint on furniture. Little did I know then that I would soon be spotting frugal ideas for decorating with chalkboard paint every which way I turned!

Case in point: These examples of chalkboard art in the Winter issue of Beautiful Homes (2009).

What a total DIY project! Okay…these examples of chalkboard art happen to have been drawn by famous artists – but who is to say there isn’t a little Margaret Israel or Catherine Murphy lurking in you? Or even one of your children? I think it would be fun and quirky to let each of your children create their own framed masterpiece, and then hang them as works of art in places other than the refrigerator. Like the mantle. Or above your living room couch.

Another frugal idea for decorating with chalkboard paint is to create a chalkboard wall. You can either paint the entire wall – like the photo up top – or paint a portion of your wall and then frame it out with molding. Here is an example of a door that I did in a prior house:

I also love the idea of using chalkboard decals like the ones seen here:

How fun are these chalkboard decals?

Decorating with chalkboard paint is definitely hot – whether it’s chalkboard art, chalkboard decals or just a painted wall!

  1. They have colored chalkboard paint now too… no more having to settle for just black or green!

  2. Yes! How fun to do a chalkboard splash of color in an unsuspecting place…like a bathroom or an entry niche. Thanks for sharing.

  3. What a great idea, Linda! I know that Krylon makes a chalkboard spray paint, which (according to the manufacturer) creates a tough, slate-like surface. Are you thinking of painting it directly to the sidewalk? Given the harsh Chicago winters…I would assume you will have to repaint seasonally if that were the case. If you are just planning to use it on a board displayed outside, then you should have no problems! The Krylon spray is made for use both in- and out-of-doors.
Good luck with your project! Please send us photos when you are through!

ps. Your pannenkoeken look very similar to the pannekaken my Norwegian husband makes each weekend! I do believe we will have to make a point of visiting Pannenkoeken Cafe the next time we hit the Chicago scene. Everything looks delish!!

  4. Do you know if there are any chalkboard decals or chalkboard paints that are dishwasher safe? I am wanting to make my own chalkboard mugs but am worried about the results of washing them…I would prefer decals as it would make the project easier but am open for any permanent chalkboard advice.

  5. Hmmm…great project idea buy I am not finding any chalkboard stickers. I did find some navy blue stickers here. You could try writing on them with chalk and see if it takes.

Stop back at FDG and let us know how it works!!
