2009 Frugal Design Showcase Home

Here’s a new twist on an old classic. We all love the to tour showcase homes, but this one is touting more than just the latest trends – it features frugal design.

For this unique fundraiser out of North Carolina, designers transform upscale model showcase homes using furniture and frunishings from local non-profit thrift stores! Items in the home are for sale, so the money generated from purchases made by those attending is then donated back to the non-profit supplying it.

    Talk about creative re-purposing!

Looking for an inexpensive way to display new and old family photos? Frugal Design Girl can help!

Try a dedicated photo wall. Creating a dedicated photo wall is easy to do.

Preserve your old family photos by using photocopies, instead of the originals.

You can mix and match frame colors to compliment your decor. Or, for a more contemporary look, you can use frames in one color. Your frames do not have to be exactly the same, though! Frugal Design Girl accomplished a uniform look to the many mis-matched frames I acquired at garage sales by spraying them all the same espresso brown.

Throw your current photos into the mix of old family photos by printing them in black-and-white, as well.

A dedicated photo wall is a great way to pay homage to different generations and decorate a large space without spending a lot of money!

Drum Roll Please….Decorated Rooms for Less

Drum Roll Please….Decorated Rooms for Less

I know that you have all been waiting anxiously for the final answer to yesterday’s round of “Spot the Look for Less.”

Survery results show that voting was basically split down the middle – demonstrating that it really is possible to produce the same “decorated” rooms with different budgets in mind.

Scroll down to see the results:

Here is the breakdown for the items for the decorated rooms. The first cost shown is for the High End room, the second is for the “Look for Less” room:

      Mirror $1275/$435
      Vase $2900/$250
      Monkey $90/$30
      Obelisk $120/$40
      Table $1400 (apprx.)/$450
      Black Chair $650/$250
      Pillow $396/yard vs. $130/yard
      Rug $3000/$800
      Sconce $400/$168
      White Chair $2140/$1380
Flooring $11/sq. ft. vs. $5/sq. ft.
      Wallcovering $120/yd. vs. $32/yd.

It is baffling to me that anyone would spend almost $10,000 MORE than they really had to on a room…but it happens ALL of the time!

That’s why finding the “Look for Less” is Frugal Design Girl’s motto.

My gosh. You can practically hear my theme song playing in the background as you read those words – “Look for Less.” (No. I don’t really have a theme song – but I should!)

So…I took it on as a PERSONAL CHALLENGE to see if I could find the look in these decorated rooms for even LESS than they did.

Did you doubt that I would?

        Here are my results:

Mirror $1275/$435…FDG found a similar one for $225
Vase $2900/$250…FDG found one to spray black for $29.99
Monkey $90/$30…FDG found the same one on sale for $38.25
Obelisk $120/$40…FDG scores one for $17.37
        Table $1400 (apprx.)/$450…FDG found a similar one for $349
Black Chair $650/$250…FDG found one on eBay for $99 OBO
Pillow $396/yard vs. $130/yard..FDG found the same fabrics for $291.06 and $94.82
Rug $3000 (apprx.)/$800…FDG found same one for $1135.20
Sconce $400/$168…FDG found a similar one for $135
White Chair $2140/$1380…FDG found a similar one for $277.99
Flooring $11/sq. ft. vs. $5/sq. ft.
        Wallcovering $120/yd. vs. $32/yd.

So…there you have it. They were good, but FDG was better.

Total cost for my version of the decorated rooms? $3,253.62

            The look for EVEN LESS.

Thanks for playing. That was fun!

What’s hot on eBay right now? Their new repurpose contest is right up Frugal Design Girl’s alley! (Hmmm…that doesn’t sound quite right.)
Anyway, eBay is offering a chance to win a $1,000 shopping spree on eBay and a personal consultation with DIYer Zem Joaquin of Ecofabulous.

Liven Up Your Home Decorating With Chalkboard Paint, Art and Decals

I recently did an article about using chalkboard paint on furniture. Little did I know then that I would soon be spotting frugal ideas for decorating with chalkboard paint every which way I turned!

Case in point: These examples of chalkboard art in the Winter issue of Beautiful Homes (2009).

Chalkboard by Catherine Murphy photo courtesy of Beautiful Homes (Winter 2009)

Blackboard People by Margaret Israel photo courtesy of Beautiful Homes (Winter 2009)

What a total DIY project! Okay…these examples of chalkboard art happen to have been drawn by famous artists – but who is to say there isn’t a little Margaret Israel or Catherine Murphy lurking in you? Or even one of your children? I think it would be fun and quirky to let each of your children create their own framed masterpiece, and then hang them as works of art in places other than the refrigerator. Like the mantle. Or above your living room couch.

Another frugal idea for decorating with chalkboard paint is to create a chalkboard wall. You can either paint the entire wall – like the photo up top – or paint a portion of your wall and then frame it out with molding. Here is an example of a door that I did in a prior house:

I also love the idea of using chalkboard decals like the ones seen here:

How fun are these chalkboard decals?

Decorating with chalkboard paint is definitely hot – whether it’s chalkboard art, chalkboard decals or just a painted wall!

Check out this great source for cool lamps! SeascapeLamps.com has some of the most unique pendant and hanging lamps that I have ever seen.
While their prices are not dirt cheap, they are reasonable. The price tag for these cool lamps is easier to swallow when you consider the bang you are getting for your buck – which is one of the fundementals of frugal decorating.

Take a look at some of the other cool lamps I found at SeascapeLamps.com:
